By request of the District Attorney's Office, judge Juan del Olmo, from the National Court (Audiencia Nacional), ordered today that the most recent issue of El Jueves, a satirical magazine, be removed from all newsstands in the country and its dissemination banned for allegedly committing the crime of slander against the Crown. The cover of the issue, made public here by Tlaxcala, shows the Prince and Princess of Asturias -Felipe de Borbón and his wife, Princess Letizia- having sex "doggie style". The cartoon refers to a new law passed by the government of Madrid whereby every Spanish couple will receive a 2.500-euro gift upon having a newborn baby. It also repeats what is rather a usual joke in El Jueves regarding the Spanish Crown: the fact that all of its members are parasites living off the public funds. The Prince tells the Princess: "You see? If you get pregnant… it's gonna be the closest I will get to actually having a job in my life!".
We expect the protests of Reporters Without Borders.
The most recent issue of the magazine was released last Wednesday 18 July 2007. The website of El Jueves is http://www.eljueves.es/.
