Atahualpa Yupanqui: El arriero/ Le muletier/ The Herder/Der Maultiertreiber
A Song for the Argentinian Bicentennial/Ein Lied zur Zweihundertjahrfeier Argentiniens

El arriero

Atahualpa Yupanqui

The Herder

Atahualpa Yupanqui

In the sands you can see the whirlwinds dancing,

the sun plays in the sparkle among the rocks,

and captured by the enchantment of the pathway,

the herder rides, the herder rides.

Left to the wind is his poncho a flag of mist,

he is saluted by the grassland flutes,

and showing off on the path of those hills,

the herder rides, the herder rides.

Chorus

Sorrows and precious cows

ride on the same trail.

The sorrows are ours,

The precious cows belong to others.

Suns that are bleeding show us the afternoon,

the lights among the rocks have fallen asleep,

and heartening the herd, over and over,

the herder rides, the herder rides.

Let’s hope that the night may bring back memories,

which may lighten our heavy loneliness.

As a shadow, the shadow through the hills,

the herder rides, the herder rides.

Der Maultiertreiber

Atahualpa Yupanqui

Refrain

Die Mühen und die Kühe
Gehen dieselben Wege.
Die Mühen gehören uns,
Die Kühe gehören Fremden.

Eine blutende Sonne kündet den Abend,
Das Blitzen des Gesteins ist entschlafen,
Die Herde anfeuernd, rasch, rasch,
Wandert der Maultiertreiber.

Möge die Nacht Erinnerungen mir schenken,
damit minder schwer wird die Einsamkeit.
Wie ein Schatten im Dunkel dieser Berge
Wandert der Maultiertreiber.
