The Big Oil Spill/Die Ölkatastrophe im Golf von Mexiko
Greg Palast, 30/4/2010

http://shannynmoore.podbean.com/2010/04/30/43010-hour-1/

In this interview Greg Palast makes the following points:

British Petroleum owns the concession for Alaska drilling and pockets the profits.  The oil from Alaska does not go to the U.S., it goes to Japan & Asia, so Obama is disengenuous when he says that more of Alaskan coastline should be opened to drilling because the U.S. «still needs the oil.»  U.S law used to require that Alaskan oil be used domestically, but under Clinton, this changed.

When the Exxon Valdez oil  spill happened in Alaska, Exxon’s name was on the tanker, but it was owned by BP.  They are lying now, as they lied then about what they are capable of doing.  They should have «rubber skirts» to contain spills, and they have never had them anywhere, not in Alaska, not in the Gulf of Mexico.

British Petroleum should not have been operating in the Mexican Gulf without taking the proper safety precautions which include:

1. Rubber booms to contain any spill – these ended up being put in place by the U.S. Navy instead of BP because BP doesn’t have any.  The Navy did not put the booms in place until Thursday following Saturday’s spill.

2. BP claims it is losing $4 million a day as a result of the spill – Palast does not say if this is as a result of lost oil or «cleanup» – but he also says it is of no importance whatsoever to BP because the price of oil has gone up $2 per barrel as a result of the spill, and BP sells 4 million barrels daily, so they’re already ahead $8 million, and losing $4 million only cuts the new profit in half.

BP was drilling much further down than 18,000 feet (more like 25,000 feet – 7620 meters), and the company is incompetent and does not know what it is doing, and does everything the cheapest possible way.

Halliburton is supposed to be dropping a cement plug into the well, and is supposed to check the pressure before doing so.  20% of their profits come from this (?).  They did not check the pressure, just took the money and threw some cement down a pipe without measuring anything.  It can’t be plugged because it is gigantic and the pressure is too high – they did not plan for this and include a remote shutoff valve which is standard for Brazilian and Norwegian oil companies drilling at great depths.
